JICS Correctional Centre Visitor Jobs: 42 Posts for Grade 12 Applicants
The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is appointing 42 Independent Correctional Centre Visitors at 38 correctional centres across South Africa, and the only school qualification you need is Grade 12. The posts pay R89,046 per year plus 37% in lieu of benefits, on a 36-month contract.
JICS is the official body that watches over conditions inside correctional centres. Its visitors are independent people from the community who listen to inmates, record complaints and make sure reported problems are followed up.

What a Correctional Centre Visitor Actually Does
This is community oversight work, not a guard or warden job. You work inside a correctional centre but not for the centre, and that independence is the point of the position.
The duties in the official advertisement are:
- Conducting site visits at the centre and reporting on urgent matters
- Holding regular interviews and consultations with inmates and correctional officials about complaints
- Receiving complaints and requests, and capturing them on the database
- Opening and maintaining case files, and following up outstanding complaints
- Submitting monthly reports and statistics on complaints received
- Attending to enquiries and carrying out instructions from the supervisor or Regional Manager
The Requirement Most Applicants Miss
A Grade 12 certificate alone is not enough. Every applicant must also have a recommendation or nomination as a Correctional Centre Visitor from a community organisation, not older than six months. Without it, your application cannot succeed, so arrange this letter before anything else.
The rest of the requirements are practical: computer literacy and accuracy, the ability to work independently and in a team, public spiritedness, sound knowledge of the Batho Pele principles, assertiveness, and good communication in speech and writing. A driver’s licence is an added advantage, not a requirement.
One more thing to know before you choose a centre: preference is given to applicants who live near the correctional centre where the post is. Applying at your local centre is a real advantage, not just a convenience.
Where the Posts Are
The 42 posts are spread across six management regions, each centre with its own reference number, from JI 65 to JI 102. The Central region includes Bizzah Makhate, Douglas, Ficksburg and Upington. Gauteng includes Johannesburg Female, Leeuwkop and Zonderwater. The Western Cape includes Caledon, Knysna, Brandvlei and Malmesbury, and the Eastern Cape includes Barkly East, Mount Ayliff and St Albans.
KwaZulu-Natal includes Durban Youth, Pietermaritzburg, Dundee and Ladysmith, while the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West region includes Makhado, Thohoyandou, Polokwane and Mogwase. The full centre list, with each post’s reference number, is in the official advertisement.
How to Apply, Online or By Hand
- Open the official advertisement and find the correctional centre you want to apply for, then note its reference number.
- Complete the new Z83 form in full, initial and sign it as instructed, and prepare a detailed, updated CV.
- For an online application, combine the Z83 and CV into one PDF saved with your surname and initials, and submit it through the link printed next to your chosen centre in the advertisement.
- Or hand-deliver your application to your region’s office, as listed in the advertisement, before the walk-in closing time.
- Apply separately for each post you want, because every post must have its own application form.
Strict Paperwork Rules That Disqualify People
JICS applies its instructions exactly as written, and several of them end applications on the spot. Online applications must be one PDF containing only the Z83 and CV; JPEG scans will not be accepted. The old Z83 form will not be considered, and a Z83 that is not fully completed, initialled and signed leads to disqualification.
Do not send certified copies now; only shortlisted candidates submit them, on or before the interview day. Late applications, and applications sent any way other than the published link or hand delivery, are invalid.
What Happens After You Apply
Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates only. Shortlisted candidates will do a pre-entry practical exercise and an integrity assessment, plus suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, credit records and qualification verification.
If you are not contacted within three months of the closing date, your application was unsuccessful. JICS also reserves the right not to make an appointment.
