Who SAPS Is Looking For

SAPS wants young, energetic people who are physically and mentally fit and genuinely wish to serve their communities. Police officials prevent, combat and investigate crime, maintain public order, and protect people and property. If you dislike discipline, shift work and physical training, this post will not suit you.

You qualify to apply if you:

  • Are a South African citizen and can prove it with your identity document
  • Are between 18 and 35 years old on the closing date
  • Have a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification
  • Are proficient in English and at least one other official language
  • Are physically, medically and mentally fit
  • Have no previous criminal convictions and no pending criminal cases
  • Have no visible tattoos when wearing the SAPS uniform
  • Are willing to be placed and to serve anywhere in South Africa

A valid driver’s licence is not compulsory, but SAPS gives preference to applicants who have one, so record it on your profile if you have it.

What You Earn During and After Training

During basic training you receive a stipend of R5,000 per month, with applicable benefits. Trainees also receive training gear, meals, accommodation and medical support while in training.

After successful basic training, you are appointed as a Constable with remuneration of R248,175 per year, followed by a 12-month probation period. The R5,000 is training pay for a few months; the real reward is the permanent career at the end of it.

How the Training Path Works

The journey starts with induction at a designated police station, where you see how a station works before academy training begins. The main part is the Basic Police Development Learning Programme at a SAPS training academy chosen by the National Commissioner. It runs for nine months for applicants entering with Grade 12, and six months for qualifying graduates, covering law, policing skills, physical fitness, firearms and practical work.

Graduates Can Be Placed in Specialised Units

If you hold a three-year tertiary qualification at NQF level 6 or higher, state it clearly in your application. Graduates in fields such as Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation and Information Technology may be considered for placement in specialised units such as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Detective and Forensic Services, or Crime Intelligence.

This is a consideration, not a promise; placement depends on your qualification, your selection results and where SAPS needs people.

A Quick Self-Check Before You Apply

Apply if you meet every basic rule, you can pass a fitness test, and you are prepared to live under strict discipline for months of training. Vetting checks criminal records, fingerprints, qualifications, citizenship and even social media conduct.

Do not apply if you have a pending criminal case, if you appear in the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register, or if you cannot meet the fitness standards: Body Mass Index of 30 or lower, and waist circumference of 102 cm or less for men and 90 cm or less for women. Be ready, too, to give a buccal (inside cheek) sample for a forensic DNA profile, and to disclose any protection order against you, because hiding one can disqualify you.

How to Apply, Step by Step

Applications are accepted through the official SAPS eRecruitment system only. SAPS charges no fee at any stage, so anyone who asks you for money to secure a post is running a scam.

  1. Go to the official SAPS eRecruitment portal and register an account with a working email address.
  2. Verify your account using the code sent to your email, then log in and complete your profile.
  3. Open the vacancies page and select the Police Trainee post, reference TRA26/27.
  4. Complete each step of the application carefully and honestly, then submit before the closing date.
  5. Only one application per person is allowed, so check every detail before you press submit.

What Happens After You Submit

Shortlisted applicants go through several assessments, not a single interview: fitness, psychometric and integrity testing, a medical evaluation and a personal interview, plus security screening. Silence for a while does not automatically mean rejection, but keep your phone and email active, because that is how SAPS will reach you.
